Cyprus festivals 3

In our venturing through the many Cyprus festivals, we’ll start today’s post by talking about something called ‘Musical Sundays’.

Musical Sundays

Between the months of March and May, on Sunday mornings and late afternoon, you’ll find performances of folk music, dance, jazz and classical music in the major cities of Larnaca – opposite to the Municipal Hall – Limassol – in the Municipal Gardens – and Pafos – either at the Castle Square or the Central Kiosk.

The Bellapais Music Festiva

This festival takes place between May and June and takes place in the Bellapais Abbey, and music lovers would be well advised to place this festival at top of their must-see list. This festival combines modern and classical music in the beautiful setting of the 13th century Abbey of Bellapais which also boasts some great acoustics and atmospherics.

Famous musicians from all across the world come to Cyprus for this festival to perform their craft. Most of the major performances will start at about 9 PM but you need to book your tickets in advance because they tend to sell out rather quickly.

Kataklymos – Festival of the Flood

This one takes place in June and celebrated mostly in Limassol. This is a five-day festival which coincides with Pentecost and it takes place fifty days after the Greek Orthodox Easter. This festival is celebrated in other coastal towns as well but its biggest celebration is in Limassol. The origins of the festival are not clear but it is thought to stem from ancient ceremonies that honor Adonis and Aphrodite.

The focus of the festival is a massive procession to the sea where the participants sprinkle water over each other. The waterfront is usually filled with folk dancers and you’ll hear many Greek and Cypriot singers. It’s also a great opportunity to purchase traditional Cypriot food and whatnot.

These three Cyprus festivals as well as others will be quite easily within your reach if you choose to employ our Cyprus car rental services, because with a car at your disposal you’ll be able to move from one part of the island to another without any hassle.
